Summer Reading Star! FREE EXCLUSIVE PRINTABLE
May 15, 2012 by Shelley
The kids are almost out of school, and the dreaded ‘Summer-Mush-Mind‘ is about to set in. {It’s contagious you know}
Well NOT if we have anything to do with it! HowDoesShe to the rescue. I was literally giddy when I saw what chickabug had designed as our next exclusive printable kit.
What is it?!
The cutest, yet most practical “Summer Reading Star” game. No more Summer-Mush-Mind. How does it work? Well, pictures speak a thousand words, so take a peek.
The Summer Reading Star game was designed to fit kids of all ages (yes that includes you). Simply set an appropriate time goal for your child on their reading “bingo card”, and let the fun begin. They will read in all sorts of magical places to fill in their card. When they hit BINGO, they get a coupon; when they get a complete BLACKOUT (filling every square) they get a golden ticket.
Each time your child finishes a book, they earn a banner piece. They can draw a picture or write a few sentences in the blank space that tells what the book was about. I can’t wait to see my little boy’s banner fill up with his adorable drawings.
When I explained the Summer reading program to him, he RAN to get his favorite hat and started reading. One box checked off his list.
He immediately asked to do another bingo square. Little cutie. I love that he was so excited about being a Summer Reading Star.
I’m seriously thinking about playing along too. I could use a few BINGO coupons…. a massage, a new pair of sunglasses, an hour of alone time…. yes, I think I will play.

The Summer Reading printables are so creative. I know my grandchildren will love watching their banner grow!
I LOVE this! I’d like to use it to motivate my students throughout the summer (I teach children who need additional reading support in first and second grade).
I’m wondering if it’s possible to make the banner pieces smaller, so that four would fit on a page? Paper is precious to our school during these tight economic times, and I’d love to print some for each of my 27 cuties.
Your work is so beautiful, and I thank you for sharing it with us!
What a great idea. Like a few people have said, I can’t seem to get the free printable of the bingo reading game. It say’s you need to be a subscriber and I have been a for a while now. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong. Thank you. cofkris@aol.com

My kids are out of control & I love it!! I’ve had to limit them to checking off two boxes a day!
I’ve taken some of the cutest pictures of them being crweative to checkl off a box while they read! This fun little project may turn them into avid readers yet. Thank you soooo much! Now I need a math incentive! LOL!
This makes me smile.
I love that they can’t stop reading / playing bingo. Please send pictures our way! We’d love to see them.

Thank you–these are wonderful! Does anybody have any ideas on how to manage when one child gets a golden ticket but another doesn’t (or is farther behind in earning it)? I can’t really take one child out for his reward but leave the others at home with a sitter (not feasible for our budget). Thanks for any ideas.
LOVE LOVE LOVE! I am totally doing this with my boys this summer. I was wondering if there’s anyway you could provide a blank bingo board so we could write in some other ideas of places to read that fit our environment? That would be awesome if you could!
Thanks for the free printables!!
I want to do this for my grandkids! I couldn’t figure out how to download because it just keeps popping up subscribed. HELP as my little kiddos are so excited to start.
