Make a Friend Board

With Jen over at Tater Tots and Jello doing all this subway art…I was beginning to feel a bit left out!
I needed some family gifts that had a bit of meaning to them so I thought I’d hop on the subway art bandwagon.
So for a family night, my husband, kiddos and I sat around the table and decided on words that described the specific family we were talking about. My two boys were screaming because they just wanted the ‘after family night cookies’ and my daughters kept saying ‘what does that word mean?’
Good times.
But we got it done and it was worth it.
I used the the Silhouette craft cutter to do this, BUT you can use word, photoshop…whatever program you have. I did it with vinyl, BUT you can just print it on paper too.
I used a big ‘{‘ on each side of the words.
I stuck the last name in first and biggest {I know it doesn’t show that, but I did} and put the description words around it.
Font is Teen BTW. I am on a ‘Teen’ font kick. It’s a free font.
I used 1/4 inch MDF board 12 inches long and 10 inches tall, but you could do any size.
Just mod podge on some paper and sand the edges.
Drill two holes in the sides of the board and twirl your wire around it. Here is a long lost post about twisting wire.
I stuck a flower in the top to give it some fluff. I did use my craft cutter to cut out the flower. If you don’t have a craft cutter, you could use ribbon, nothing, or a fake flower…
I am loving the yellow. This one, as you can tell, was for Shelley. When she was 8 months pregnant with her twins she wore a darling bright yellow shirt. So the color yellow reminds me of her:)
Then as you hand it to your dear friend…try not to let them read it while you are there or tears will flow. There are so many amazing people that have touched my life…I need to make more of these!

That’s really a sweet idea! I love the idea of such a fun personalized gift. It looks like something I could create in PSE and print right onto patterned paper.

OK … I’ve got everything ready to go to make one of these for a dear friend and I cannot WAIT to give it to her!! However … I cannot find the wire. Home Depot was no help … they just kept sending me to the electrical (only insulated there) or picture hanging (just aluminum and galvanized) – Ugh! I haven’t tried Lowe’s yet … but can you tell me how you found it there? Is it in a package or on a spool that needs to be cut? Thanks!!

I got it at Lowes…its in the area where they sell picture hanging stuff, nails, screws. It comes on a spool and you don’t cut any off. Its around 8-9 bucks. Hope that helps:)

Okay, Alison, I have a silly question to ask you: where/how did you make that flower? I have a Silhouette, and I’ve been looking all over for a tutorial on how to make that. I’m in the middle of making this friend board for my cousin, and it just won’t be complete without the flower!

It was a freebie off the silhouette site:) It was 3-4 flowers stacked and then I put a brad though it:) Your cousin will LOVE this!
I love these. I started doing them last year at Christmas. I’ve done several different ones. My Bible study class members got one in the shape of a Christmas tree. I’ve done them for baby showers too. They are always a big hit.
