Piles of dirt, debris, crushed cars,  and destroyed homes are now what you see when you walk down the cluttered street of a close-nit community in New York. Hurricane Sandy not only took homes and businesses, but robbed the lives of many.  This drawn-out devastation left tens of thousands without power, without transportation, without warm water, without a home.

Joshua Brown, filmaker and photographer  (Joshua Brown Photography ) beautifully documents the destruction and the massive clean up from volunteer groups such as the Mormon Helping Hands and has given permission to share it with you along with the above frames from the footage he shot.

You got to see this.

This time of the year our hearts are open to those around us who may be struggling this holiday season. Whether it be a simple gift to the neighbor or a service project for a family in need- we all have the desire in our hearts to help…but sometimes we get stuck on… HOW?

Well, let me give you a few ideas.
1. Use your talents.

If you got em’ why not use them? As you may recall from this post, my sister Bianca Merkley, or better known around here as “Bee” has gotten together with other local New York artists and donated their time and talents with the production of this Christmas single you can download for $1 or whatever donation you desire. 100% of the money raised will go towards families in need in New York affected by Sandy. We are half way to our goal. So, you better act fast- the deadline for the fundraiser is Friday December 21st. You can get the updates of the project on Bianca Merkley’s blog.
Take a listen and download her song here:

Want to know the best part?
You can give the downloads away as gifts.

Print these tags and fill in the individual code for each person and attach it to a gift such as the Hot-Chocolate-in-a-Jar like we did here.

Bianca shares how to get codes and printables here.

2. Get your kids involved!
Gather all the troops! What a great opportunity to teach our children about service. Have them come up with ideas on who they want to help and how they want to help.  A great idea for this time of the year is to create a hot chocolate stand to raise funds.

3. HAVE FUN!

Don’t forget to have fun and take the time to enjoy the experience of the magical time of the year! The more fun your kids have while serving- the more they will want to seek out more projects to do on their own!

I saw a neighbor doing this Hot chocolate stand at the High School cafeteria and it was a hit. Why have a soft drink when you can have hot cocoa.

This is such a BEAUTIFUL idea! Thank you for sharing it with all of us! I can't wait to set one up for the kids because there are so many that need help right now. It's a perfect add-on to our recent post, "Kindness Inspires Kindness" makinglifewhimsical.blogspot.com/2012/12/kindness-inspires-kindness.html. My kids were wondering how they could HELP. Now I have a way! Thank you! May your holiday be ever so wonderful!
