Creating with Fondant – Yes. You. Can.
August 16, 2011 by Shelley
Lucky for me, this Summer, I live near Lake Michigan. My life has been forever changed. My little family literally goes to the beach every. single. weekend. We can NOT get enough. In one word, a family day at the beach: JOY. Have you been playing in the water/sun this year?! It’s not too late!
So, what does that have to do with fondant? Technically not much, but, let me start at the beginning. A few months ago, I was window shopping on Etsy. Does anyone else have that addiction?! I stumbled across some gorgeous fondant cake toppers by LCCakes. I immediately decided it was high time I learned how to create with fondant. So what did I do? I contacted LCCakes directly and asked them to teach me us. Nala responded with a step by step tutorial on how to create BEACH cupcake toppers. Perfect tutorial for my Summer in the sun.
Are you ready?! It’s not hard. Pinky promise.
You will need to get your hands on some good fondant. You can buy pre-made fondant at most craft stores, (Wilton brand), or you can make your own fondant. I have personally had great success with this marshmallow fondant recipe.
Now it’s time to hand you over to the professional: Nala, from LCCakes. Her step by step tutorial makes this totally do-able.
Materials needed:
White fondant
Sky blue fondant
Yellow fondant
Water (to use as glue)
Vegetable shortening or powdered sugar (to prevent sticking)
Surfboard template (included)
Tools:
Rolling pin or Knife
Pizza cutter
Paintbrush
Wilton letter cutter (optional)
FLIP FLOPS
1. Roll 2 small yellow balls (approx. 1/2″ each), 1 ball for each flip flop.
2. Roll each ball into a log shape (approx. 1″ long each)
3. Flatten the “log” and bend a slight curve on the inside of each flip flop.
4. Take 2 small white balls and roll into a thin rope (approx. 1″ long) for the flip flop toe strap.
5. Bend the rope in half and pinch the center to create a wide “V” shape.
6. Brush a small amount of water on the back of the ropes and glue them onto the front of each flip flop.
7. Roll 2 tiny blue balls and glue to front of flip flop strap.
BEACH TOWEL
1. Roll out a sheet of blue fondant (approx. 0.25mm thick).
2. Use a pizza cutter or knife and cut out rectangle shape from the sheet of blue fondant (approx. 2″ long x 1 1/2″ wide).
3. Roll out thin sheet of yellow & white fondant for the beach towel’s stripes.
4. Cut a wide yellow strip (approx. 1/2″ wide) and 2 thin white strips (0.25″ wide).
5. Brush a small amount of water on the back of the strips and glue onto the beach towel (cut off excess).
6. Roll up one end of the towel and glue into place.
7. Use a pizza cutter or knife to add details to the other end of the towel.
SURF BOARD
To make surfboard:
1. Roll out sheet of white fondant (approx. 0.25″ thick)
2. Place surfboard template on top of fondant and cut around the template with a knife or rolling pin.
3. Roll out a thin sheet of yellow fondant and cut a thin strip (approx. 0.25 mm wide).
4. Brush a small amount of water on the back of the strip and glue onto surfboard (cut off excess).
5. Roll out a thin blue sheet of fondant, press number cutter into fondant and carefully remove the piece of fondant from the cutter.
And put the whole set together for a Summer beach party!
Just think of all the possibilities with fondant!! It’s easier than it looks. A special thanks to Nala from LCCakes for teaching us a basic fondant tutorial. Now hurry and give these a try before Summer is over. And go to the beach while your at it!
Heck, EAT them at on the beach. Now THAT sounds just about perfect…
{We’re linking up to these parties!}

Shelley, that picture makes me want to go to a beach!
So cute! This is such a great tutorial. Fondant always seemed so scary to me! Thanks so much for sharing, Nala!
Fun ideas! Solid fondant reminds me of Silly Puddy – so it might be fun for kids to help do this! It tastes pretty nasty, tho…any ideas to sweeten the deal?
So adorable! Maybe I can make some for a beach party here on the Oregon Coast!
Gorgeous and creative…looks yummy!
Tried marshmallow fondant for the first time and loved it. Not only is the stuff yummy! It was easy to use. I may never frost a cake again =)
