Advent Awesome!
November 23, 2010 by Missy
Have I ever mentioned how I LOVE advent calendars! Why? Maybe because of all the great memories it brings back from my childhood. My mom always bought me and my siblings our own cardboard chocolate advent calendar. OH! The anticipation I felt each morning to be able to open and reveal the next little bite of sweetness! The chocolate was good, but the anticipation is what sealed the memory. SO FUN!! It was interesting to learn a bit more about the history behind advent calendars, here. I have added to my advent calendar line up over the years and I needed a place to organize all the different things I want to do each day leading up to Christmas. Here is what I came up with…
I will fill each envelope with:
1. A little piece of candy for each child…most likely chocolate.:)
2. A simple, fun activity to do together as a family. (Click here for some great ideas!)
3. A scripture passage that will lead us on a journey to learn more about Jesus – after all, it is His birthday we are celebrating! We will add one star ornament each day as we read this passage.
What you will need:
I had this peg board just begging for some color.
Some envelopes.
Countdown numbers. I found these, here. I love ishare!
Some clips to hold and hang the envelopes.
Ornaments.
I just printed the printables, punched them out with my scallop 3 1/2 inch punch, clipped the number with the envelope and hung it on my spray painted peg board. So EASY and SO festive! The anticipation. My kids can’t wait…success!

What a cute idea! Might have to give this a try
I love this Missy! So simple and so festive! Cute pics too.
Love the blue pegboard! So so cute Missy!
Cute! My girl and I spent Sunday morning making a cone tree forest advent calendar out of paper. It turned out cute, but I realized it’s kind of fragile to store so it looks like it will be a one year gig. I think next year I’ll do a felt stocking garland advent calendar!
I don’t know if we ever grow up, really. When you’re lying in bed each morning in a sleepy haze, don’t you just love something that pops you out of bed? I LOVE how darling your Advent Calendar turned out, and I can see why your kids are excited! And all of those meaningful scriptures the kids will discover each day – priceless!
I LOVE this! The pegboard, envelopes and clips are so clever and those stars add the perfect finishing touch!
LOVE this project!! The star ornaments are perfect. And I’m SO not surprised that even your clips are extra-adorable… I swear. ; )
Hey didn’t I organize those clips for you recently.
LOVE this idea! I too remember the chocolate advents mom used to get us. I LoVed those things. I totally want to make this. I love the added stuff with the scavenger hunt for a Christmas book & a scripture. So clever and fun.
Really cute!
Love the colors, too!
I totally had the chocolate Advent calendars growing up and now purchase them for my kids! They are always excited about opening each little door each morning…just like I was “a few” years ago!
I collect Christmas advent calendars. I think this year my 4 children each get to do two every day.
Overboard?
Perhaps. But I love the memories they make!
Do you have a schedule of the verses that you picked over the 25 days?

I put a link back to this project today on my blog! Thanks for great inspiration!!!!

I would also LOVE and appreciate a list of scriptures you used. My daughter will adore that we get to make this together then to use it every day until Christmas will be priceless! Thanks so much, Missy!
This is adorable! I just did something similar with paper. I love the backdrop board on yours:-)
I though I’d left it too late to whip up an advent calendar for my kiddies until I saw this post and we’re now on day 5 of our calendar (we’re in Australia so perhaps a little bit ahead of you
!! so pleased with it and every envelope has either a portion of the Christmas story – which the kids will illustrate and we’ll make into a simple book; instructions for a craft activity or family activity; or a treat so every day is something different – and we’re also making our own nativity scene leading up to Christmas. Thanks so much for this post

Super cute. We did the advent forest too and love that. I heart advent ideas
I feel the same way about advents, but for the opposite reason-we didn’t do this when I was a child so I want to give this experience to my kids!
im in the process of constructing my very first advent calendar for my kids this year, ages 5 & 6. So excited about it and this gave me even more great ideas. thanks!
I love all the different and great Advent calendar ideas!
Cute! We are doing advent but don’t have an actual calendar. I love this idea, though, and want to implement a calendar to keep track.
I have been on the hunt for a great advent calendar…now this one is on my list to make! Thanks for the adorable idea…s…! Seriously your site is a wealth of adorableness!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing them!

I love this! I have been looking for a new advent idea. I might have to do this, seems quick and easy.
Wow, very creative. I’ll have to give this a try.
I am loving this… so simple to do yet SO VERY CUTE!
Great idea, Missy. I live alone, but could certainly use this as a way to go through my holiday to-do list, enjoy a little chocolate every day, and I’m especially inspired about the use of scriptures. What a lovely way to learn new and remember familiar scriptures!!
