Lemon Squeeze

What to do with all these lemons?

I know!

SQUEEZE ‘EM!

fresh SQUEEZED lEmOnAdE!

This is one of the most refreshing ways to cool off in the summer heat.  It tastes so delicious, I always thought it MUST be hard to make.  I was excited to learn how easy it really is when I ordered one at our local farmer’s market and watched them make it.  I thought, I can do that!  Most of you have already discovered how easy it is and probably have it all the time!  Today I am celebrating the fact that I am joining the lemonade making club with a tutorial of my own.  In case there are any of you out there who haven’t discovered how easy it is to make homeade lemonade, you will now know how and can be initiated into the club as well.  If you already do know how to make it,  you will just have to salivate at the pictures and wonder why you aren’t making some right now!

Start with a simple syrup of equal parts water to sugar.  I used 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar.

Heat until the sugar disolves and the syrup turns clear instead of cloudy.  Chill.

Then you need your lemon juice.

Here is a little hint my mom taught me, heat your lemon in the microwave for about 10 seconds and then push and roll the lemon before you cut it open – it will help you get the juice out easier!

Cut your lemons in half (adult supervision, of course:)

Then squeeze the juice out.  My sister-in-law gave us a citrus juicer and it is wonderful!  It makes my kids LOVE to help juice!  You just plug it in and when you push your lemon on the top it automatically spins and the juice comes right out.  It really is fun.  I couldn’t find my exact one, but here is a similar one

 MMMM.

Combine the 3 cups water, 1 cup lemon juice and the simple syrup you made above and there you have it,

Fresh Squeezed Lemonade!  SOOOO GOOOD!

As you can see, this didn’t last long enough for me to get a picture of it full!

 hApPiNeSs!

I haven’t tried this yet, but I thought it might be fun to try using Club Soda instead of water to make it

sPaRkLiNg lemonade!

Or use limes instead of lemons

or add a bit of cherry grenedine to make it a cherry lemonade or limeade…oooh the possibilities, YUM:)

I love making it and my sons love to drink it! We actually end up using bottles lemon juice, for the time it saves, but I must admit, I’ve never noticed a huge difference. What DOES make a difference is the simple syrup. My husband used to make it all the time and none of the rest of us would drink it b/c he just added regular sugar to cold lemon juice and water…gross. :)

Great idea! I knew how to make lemonade but just never seem to get around to it! When lemons go on sale for dirt cheap we stock up on them for future use. I just throw the whole thing in the freezer and take them out as needed. They are super easy to zest this way plus once they thaw out they are super duper easy to juice!! Do you keep a jar of simple syrup in the refrigerator for this purpose? I like to make up a couple of jars (quart mason jars) to keep around for lemon/limeade or sweet tea.

  8. Bridget says:

I add another step and zest the lemons before I squeeze them and then freeze the zest.

This makes me want to buy some more lemons since I only have one in the fridge now! Looks yummy.

I’m so glad you posted this–Missy and I always go for the fresh squeezed lemonade at our local Saturday market, but how great to be able to make it at home for less! Don’t forget to add fun-shaped ice cubes…

  11. Mary Ann says:

Make some lemonade and freeze it in some ice cube trays and when you have a fresh cup just add some of the frozen cubes to it! Yummy!

I like adding a little lemon zest to the simple syrup. Gives it a little extra :)
