Okay, so the trays I used were the problem. Originally I used the ice trays from the dollar section at Target. They were not silicone. Tried again with silicone muffin cups and they turned out perfect. Added some glitter to the bottom of the cups and some on top after the crayons melted so they are kind of sparkly. Hooray!

I don't know what I did wrong. I love this idea and want to make them right. I used Crayola crayons and a flexible mold but after they cooled the color and wax had started to separate. Anyone else had this problem? Maybe I should find a metal pan and stick them in the freezer??

I just finished making these with my 9yo daughter. We had a LOT of fun. They turned out soooo cool. I was hesitant about doing this because I couldn't find the silicone pan anywhere (not even Michaels), but bought a metal one (by Wilton) at Hobby Lobby. There were 6 hearts to a pan. After following the directions for melting them, I let them cool 10 minutes, then popped them in the freezer for about 3-5 minutes. They just slid out of the pan! Super easy!

I've used metal pans. If you put some oil in them they pop right out! :) Thanks for the cute idea!

Not too long ago, I found some in the dollar spot at Target. It was a group of two mini silicone heart-shaped pans for $2.50 I think. I've also seen the bigger version at Michael's for $9.99. Use the 40% coupon for a great deal! HTH!

I really wanted to do this for my son's preschool class but I can't find a silicone pan! I'm also a teacher and wanted to give them to my students.
I keep coming across the heart shaped ice cube trays but I wasn't sure it would stand up to the heat of the oven.

I love this! I'm doing these right now for my mom who is a teacher. She's going to give them out as Valentines to her kids! I do have a question. Can I reuse the heart mold to actually make something edible if I wash it in the dishwasher? I don't want to accidentally poison anyone but assume I can if I wash it? Any ideas? Thanks. I love your site!

Thank you for this GREAT idea! We are always doing fun things for my sons 1st grade class, and this one is new! The kids had a blast making them last night, and were so excited to be able to rip the paper off and break crayons. My 4 year old daughter said "Mommy, are you sure we can do this?" "Daddy might get mad."

Thank you again!!

I've made these a couple times with my kids. If you make a hole with a toothpick just before they are totally set you can string some yarn through and make them into necklaces. I've had them turn out well multi-colored, but the trick is to have equal amounts of dark/light colors and as was stated, avoid brown, grey, and black. Also, do not to stir or wiggle the wax. Mixing the warm wax together mixes the colors too much.

These are so awesome! We made them for my daughter's preschool class for Christmas. We bagged them and put a label to seal the bag. The label said "Hope you have a colourful Christmas!"

Oh, and I made them in a regular muffin tin (now my craft tin). When they were done in the oven, pop them in the fridge, and once cooled, they pop out like a hot-darn when flipped upsidedown!

I love your website -- been lurking for awhile! CHEERS!
