That just-right lipstick for fall

fall lipstick

Fall is my absolute favorite. The clothes, the coziness, the colors! These next few weeks, to kick off our soon-to-be fall fashion, I’ll be doing a mini-series on beauty and some of the fall color trends that pretty much anyone {yes, YOU} can pull off. You ready?

First stop: Lipstick
I’ve mentioned before that the lipstick aisle in a make-up store has always been my favorite. How can you resist all those brightly colored tubes, opened and waiting for you swipe on with a Q-tip and smack your lips in a much-too-small mirror? In the past, I’ve tended to lean toward the nude/pale pinks of the aisle. Until last summer when I finally decided I was man enough {not sure that reference works here} to swipe on some brights.
Below, I’ll show you five of my favorite shades … all perfect for transitioning into fall. While some may be more comfortable sticking with those pretty nudes and pinks, hopefully the comparison will show you that brights can be fun, flattering and not as intimidating as you might think!
fall lipstick Wearing Maybelline #950 Pink Beam
This is the tube of lipstick that’s the shortest because I’ve worn it almost daily. It’s my favorite shade when going for a minimal fresh-faced look, but for that transition into fall, I’m looking forward to pairing it with a dark smoky eye and defined brows.
fall lipstick Wearing Revlon #002 Pink Pout
This matte pinky shade is a step-up from nude, but still tame enough to wear on a daily basis. It’s my favorite when I want to look flushed, healthy and pink. Paired with a pretty blush, it’s a perfect fresh-faced fall look that will be go great with those chunky sweaters and ponchos I’m looking forward to so much.
fall lipstick Wearing Maybelline #140 Fuchsia Fever
This is a shade that I’ve worn regularly throughout the summer, but is surprisingly great for the transition into fall. For someone who likes to spend minimal time on eye make-up {if it takes me longer than 3 minutes … forget it} this shade is great for brightening up any look. I mean please, who even needs blush when your lips looks like that? Transitioning the color-blocking trend into fall, this shade will be one of my faves for pairing with mustard yellow sweaters and hunter green rain boots.
fall lipstick Wearing M.A.C. Ruby Woo
And of course, how can you talk about fall beauty without bringing up the classic red? I know it can be intimidating guys … I KNOW. But how gorgeous is it? And it can make such a pretty world of difference. {Just compare the top shade to this!} My favorite way to wear this fall shade, is actually to dress it down. I love it with heels, don’t get me wrong. But red lips paired with some rugged brown boots and a cozy cream knit poncho? You won’t even know what to do with yourself you’ll look so pretty.
fall lipstick Wearing Sephora Rouge
And finally, the brightest of berries. I spent literally an hour in Sephora with my sister-in-law, debating whether I should get it or not. This shade is gorgeous, but so dark, the application has to be spot-on. In the end, I was happy with my purchase, mostly because just looking at it in the tube makes me feel like the leaves are already changing outside. Wearing this dark berry shade during the day requires the same strategy as the red: casual and cozy , maybe with a large knit scarf and your favorite high rise jeans.

So what do you think? What shades would you be willing to try? Have tried? What’s your favorite fall beauty look you’re most looking forward to?

Side note: These shades will look mui excellante next to your hot-chocolate mustaches. Something I also tend to be wearing year round.

Sydney

Sydney just made the recent move to Washington D.C. where she resides with her husband and new baby boy. She’s enjoying the transition from college grad to a developing domestic queen. Her latest domestic accomplishment: skipping the Mac-and-Cheese aisle at Walmart. You can find more of Sydney on her blog, the daybook.

You look SO good in lipstick, but whenever I wear it, I feel like a little kid playing dress up! I’ve tried a ton of shades and none seem to work, so I’m starting to think I’m applying it wrong. I’d love it if you could share your application tips with us!

  2. Bianca says:

I wouldn’t normally gravitate to such a dark berry as that last one, BUT… you just may have convinced me ;)

  3. La Chapstick Fanatique says:

red and plum are definitely my go-tos for fall. right now for summer it is coral and red.

Beautiful! I’m a little less intimidated now to go to the lipstick isle. It’s only been chap-stick for me…until now!

  6. Wendy Fugal says:

  10. Patti says:

My problem with the lipstick aisle is that I always leave with 6 new shades and I get home and realize I have at least 3 of the colors. I love this:)

  11. Katie says:

Beautiful! Could you please give some application tips? I’m curious what your techniques and tricks are.

  12. Angie says:

What is the shade of the sephora rouge lipstick? It’s beautiful!

  13. Zipdinger says:

I never, I mean *never* wear lipstick, on principle, because my mom always has so it must be old-fashioned, right?! Lip gloss girl, all the way. But…maybe this year I’ll try some muted tones underneath the gloss? Maybe. You make it look so easy…

  14. Morgan says:

Wow, that berry is incredible. Seriously beautiful!

  15. Rhonda says:

GREAT colors! I’m definitely going to need to know what color blush you’re wearing. Is it the same in all the pictures and the lip color just makes it look different or did you change it up to compliment the lipstick?

  16. Maddie says:

That berry… ohhh weeeeee.. that is smokin hot for sure. But I am going to chime in asking how to keep it off the teeth and from spreading about so that you look like a 98 year old women on her first trip out of the old folks home in a year ( come on.. you KNOW what I mean)

You are the reason that I’m on the hunt for lipstick. Lip balm just won’t do anymore. My only problem so far has been finding a natural lipstick.

  27. Amber says:

I LOVE your side swept bangs. How do you get your hair dresser to cut them right and what method do you use to style them?

  28. Aimee says:

What is the color name of the Sephora Rouge Lipstick? I looked it up online and Rouge seems to be the collection name not the color name. I love that color and would like to try it myself.

  29. Sydney reese says:

I’ve always wanted to wear lipstick, but my lips get dry a few minutes after applying and it wears off really quickly.. Any tips on applying and keeping it looking good throughout the day??

  30. Siesie says:

I LOVE the red and hot pink lipstick on you! Whenever I wear red or hot pink, I wear lipstick to match. But lately I’ve been annoyed with women telling me I should wear a “nude” lipstick instead, like bright lipstick is a big no-no. I personally love it.

  31. shelley says:

LOVE this post Sydney. I now have red lipstick thanks to you. ;)

  32. Ashley Blunt says:

I have looked for the Pink Beam #950 everywhere and cannot find it! Any ideas of where to get it?? Target was a no go!

Yeah, we’re pretty much all in love with your hair. How about a post on that sometime soon?! Looks like a pretty fall “do” to me!! :)

I like the last lipstick…very pretty!

  34. joyful.mara says:

I never wear lipstick. I’m a gloss girl. But…after seeing this post and loving those shades – especially on someone who has similar coloring to me – I am ready to try it again. I am loving ALL of them!!! Thanks for the push into makeup experimentation!

  35. erin d. says:

i love this post – have referred to it many times! can you tell me what blush you’re wearing?! i’m loving it and in need of a new one! definitely going to go try on the MAC ruby woo – beautiful!

so i need to know – Your hair here. I really want that color. howd you get it? bottle? what is your natural color?

  37. lindsey says:

I love the last lipstick SO much. On Sephora’s website, they don’t have a color called Rouge..just a line. Is it a specific color within that line, or should I just go in and let them figure it out?

  38. melinda says:

for ruby woo lipstick you’ve used a lipensil ?
