A Free What? Giveaway time! A free Silhouette craft cutter…

March 1, 2010 by

***This Giveaway has ended. Congratulations to Jennifer Bradshaw! Check out this post for an amazing HowDoesShe discount code on a Silhouette through the end of March. Thank you for participating in this giveaway!***cutter-1This post will make you glad you found HowDoesShe {{it makes me glad I found HowDoesShe}}!

We are SO excited to share this with you…

You know we {{especially Alison}} love using vinyl to finish off and add a touch of professionalism to crafts.  We have told you about how personal cutters (ie. cricut cutters) are an amazing way to help you craft beautifully for yourself and for gifts which saves you thousands of dollars!

Well, we decided to research other personal cutters and show you what we found.

“I am a hands on gal and I need to see it to believe in it.  I know cutting vinyl can be touchy and getting the blade to cut only the vinyl and not the backer paper can be tricky.  I don’t want half of my letters cut, or my blade to bugger up the vinyl.   I was very happy with how the Silhouette cut!  It was easy to install on my computer and setting up the blades was quick.  I love that I don’t have to buy different cartridges if I want to switch up the look of the craft.  I also am a fan of how big{{or small}} it is.  I know it needs to be hooked up to a computer to design, but there is a slot to hold a SD card so I can take it and use it elsewhere…like craft group or my sister-in-law’s house:)  My cutter has saved me a ton of $$ on gift giving!!!”  -Alison

abc kids decor“I am a party girl. I love the details in throwing a party. Lately I’ve been eying all the gorgeous paper products showing up at celebrations. Once I got my hands on the Silhouette, I was thrilled when I saw all the down loadable templates for scalloped labels, cupcake toppers, cupcake wrappers and more! I grabbed my scrapbook paper and got to work and created the adorable details in our  St. Patty’s Day post.”  -Shelleyst-patricks-day-cupcake-2“I love sparkles!  With the silhouette you can download template designs, adhere the sparkles to the design and then transfer it to whatever you want!  You can personalize clothing, cards, scrapbooks, etc.!  I made a ‘birthday girl’ shirt for my daughter’s birthday coming up – I will post it soon.  I can’t wait to sparkle more things!” – Missy

So…what did we find out?

It works!  It works wonderfully! One of the best things is that you can use fonts off of your computer! Here is our post on our favorite free fonts.

No need to buy cartridges…why didn’t we invent this?

Just a little preview of how the Silhouette Craft Cutter works !cutter-41.  Here is a shot of the program.  My requirement…it needs to be user friendly and something I can figure out without reading the manual…it passed!

cutter-6

2.  Put your medium (vinyl or paper) on the mat and squish it down.  The first time you use it…it is super sticky.   I liked it better after a little stickiness is gone.  Do you see the red and blue dots on the left side above the keyboard?   You put those in the cutter and that determines how deep it will make the cut.  For vinyl I used the yellow one??…it is in the cutter:)

cutter-7

3.  Look at her work!

cutter-5

4.  This is what it looks like after it comes out of the cutter.

cutter-3

5.  Then for the tweezing.  Pull the outside vinyl off and then go back through the letters and pull out the middles of the a’s, r’s, o’s…you get the point.cuttter-26.  USE BACKER PAPER!!!!  If I had to pull each letter off and stick it in a straight line…I’d go crazy.  Backer paper is what you stick over the letters, rub it and then pull the backer paper off lifting the letters with it.  {{Hint:  for small projects you can use masking tape or painters tape}}  Backer paper is just a huge strip of tape!

7.  Place the letters and backer paper on the project.  Rub it again and pull the backer paper off…tada!

Oh, this is easy I don’t even have to go to the site! I’d use it to make a large wall piece for my daughters room, with birds and flowers and possibly garden gnomes. Oh, the possibilities are endless with this…. my husband would probably have to give me time limits with it!!

Thanks for the chance to win! :)

I have never even heard of this machine, but I can think of so many great uses! I would love to put some great quotes on my kids new shared room :)

  9. Leanne B says:

WOW! It is not a matter of which one is my favorite but that I need more hours in the day to do all the projects I can think of with this crazy new tool! What a fun thing! I think I would start with the vinyl wall decor since I am in a redecorating mood right now! The possibilities are endless!

  10. Sheila Irish says:

I am beyond thrilled to have this chance to win a Silhouette!!!! Thank you to everyone involved in this fabulous Give-A-Way!!!! Can you tell I am excited? LOL The FIRST time I researched the Silhouette was after seeing your post on the mugs with the vinyl done on them….After that, I fell in love with all of your vinyl ideas….So hard to choose a favorite one, but I would have to say it is the Vinyl Mugs….

  11. I have been thinking about a cricut, but told to go professional if I’m wanting to add products to my website. I would love to try this product out, thanks for sharing the information. BTW~ I want to do ALL the stuff you can do with it, lol

  12. Heather W says:

OOh, I would love to win this product. I’ve recently gotten into card making but the supplies are so expensive. this would be a fantastic alternative. I’d also love to make glass etched 9x13s to give as wedding gifts!

  13. Kimberlie Todd says:

I love the way this works, and love all the examples you have on your site! I have been looking for ways to cut back on money I spend – we are beginning foster care, going from 3 kids to 6, and I think this would be a great way to make gifts for family instead of buying them (and saving big bucks along the way)! I hope I win… :)

  14. Lauren says:

I have wanted a vinyl cutter for SO long! I have it written on my “wish list” and tacked to my bulletin board! I LOVE the ABC idea that you guys had a few weeks ago. It would be so cute in my little boy’s room! Thanks for all your fantastic ideas!!!

  15. Melissa West says:

Oh my the wall decor is amazing it would most def be my first project. Thanks for hosting such a fun giveaway! Melissa

  16. Sara B says:

This machine is simply amazing! I can think of hundreds of things I would use it for including wall displays for my daughters room, personalized picture frames, unique lampshades & so much more. I could also use it for the many kids craft activities I do on my personal blog. I’ve looked into buying a cricut but this may be a better investment!

  17. Wilma says:

I would be beyond thrilled if I won this! I’d probably start with wall vinyl (trees), but would definitely use it in all the different ways. Heat transfer onto fabric, gift boxes, it’s all too cool!

  18. Kim says:

I can’t just pick ONE thing I would do with this! Making banners, adding vinyl lettering to my bedroom wall (which I have been WANTING to do). And the fishbowl is amazing, but I really like the cookie jar… I could imagine doing that to my juice dispenser! :)

  19. haley says:

ooooooh! im in love! this is amazing! id use it for our weekly craft days.. decorate my beebees room with vinyl decor.. presents for everyone.. so fun! thanks for the opportunity to win it.. and the hookup on a deal for one.

  20. Kristin Johnson says:

I would use it both for decorating my house and for gifts. I am a serial hobbyist and I can find a project anywhere! Bring it on! I’ll wear that thing out!

  21. Callie Perkins says:

WOW!! This thing is awesome! I think my favorite use would be the heat transfers – my little guy is an 11-month-old wearing 2T clothes. He goes through them so fast that I’ve taken to buying plain clothes (because they’re usually cheaper), and I have been wanting to find a way to “spruce” the clothes up. This would be great!

My second favorite idea was the glass etching – there are so many ideas I have for that it’s ridiculous.

Love it! Even if I don’t win I’ll probably buy it!

  22. Domanique Glazier says:

So many options, I think I would use it on my flour and sugar jars to start things off, and think of all the cool gifts. Oh I am in love.

  23. Kelly says:

I would love to make home decor gifts to give to friends and family. Such great ideas!

  24. Cindy says:

I have been wanting to try glass etching! This would be perfect to use to monogram glass holders for candles!—– and then I would want to try the vinyls, the heat transfers, wow the possibilities!

  25. Jackie says:

Hard to pick just one use, but I think using it for gift items would be my top choice.

  26. Lisa M says:

This is the first I have ever heard of the Silhouette. I was wanting to get the cricut but I think this would be better for me. I would love to use it for decorating…..everything! I love all the projects but I think I’m in love with mugs!
    Lisa

  27. Sarah says:

WOW, double WOW!! I would not know where to start. Probably with some new decorating in my girls rooms.

  28. Mary says:

I am pregnant with my 4th kid and a major room redo is in order for my existing 2 girls and boy. I would love the Silhouette to help with all of the personalization that I want to do on the walls and furniture! I LOVE VINYL!!!

  29. Gweneth Branch-Rice says:

Wow, this is amazing. I would love to use this tool to do glass etching projects. But it would be fabulous for any lettering project you want to look really professional, fabulous!!!

id be glass etching my little heart out! please pick me! (ps it is almost my birthday…the big 3-9 (you know-top of the hill) and then my hubby could give this to me!)

  31. Carrie says:

Vinyl cutouts, cards, scrapbooking. Who could choose just one thing to do with it! Thanks for the chance!

  32. Marian says:

I would totally start with all the home decor projects that I have been putting off…like our family monogram plaque. I’ve been saving my pennies for a Cricut machine but the Silhouette craft cutter looks far more user friendly. It would be great to win. Thanks for offering such an awesome giveaway!

  33. merideth says:

cards! birthday, get well, holiday, etc. plus, vinyl to etch glass. but i have GOT to try the new heat-transfer vinyl!!! every year, i make my kids (and granddaughter) t-shirts for holidays, like st. patrick’s day. using the heat-transfer vinyl will make it soooo much easier and neater-looking!

  34. brenbren says:

I would use it for all my vinyl crafting needs instead of buying the vinyl (which I have been doing ALOT lately). I make signs, blocks, wall decor, etc.
My favorite project is the floating frame. I have been wanting to make something like this. YEAH! Thanks for hosting such a fun giveaway!

  35. Brandy says:

I would use it for scrapbooking, for sure…I’ve been researching the difference in the Silhouette and the Cricut, and think I’d get alot more use from this one! Thanks for the chance to win it!

  36. Jackie says:

I love the idea of being able to make fun and beautiful gifts for friends and family with the cutter. And I love the way Shelley used it to dress up her cupcakes. The parties would be so much more beautiful with the endless possibilities. Thanks for giving us the chance to win!!

  37. Tina S. says:

Wow! I would definitely use the Silhouette for scrapbooking–titles, die cuts, journaling spots, photo mats–the list is really endless. I’d also make some of the cool stuff with vinyl that I have been seeing all over the internet. I’d like some wall decor–definitely have specific ideas for this–and for gift making similar to the Christmas countdown wall art or the pancake batter bowl. I love, love, love the “floating” photo display as well. Too many choices but I can see a whole new world of crafting opening up before my very eyes!

  38. Kandra says:

I’ve been wanting a cricut for a long time, but the cost of the cartridges just kept me away from it. I love the freedom of this product – and had NEVER heard of it until today!

I’d use it mainly for gifts and scrapbooking :)

The idea of glass etching! I would so do that!

  39. Cari says:

I think i would “vinylize” my whole house! I really want a sign down the hall where i hang my kids art work that says “Look What I Made”. I hope I win!

  40. Karen says:

I would love to have one for crafting. My 3 kids are old enough now that I am finally getting time to do crafts again after 10 years. It’s great to have my “me” time back. I would you it for vinyl decor and scrapbooking (10 years of family pictures that I haven’t had time to do)

  41. Amy says:

I love it! I am trying to save money to fund an adoption, so I could totally use that to save money on gifts and such.

  42. rebekah says:

card making and vinyl!! this would be sssssoooooo nice to win!!! thanks for the chance!

  43. tophnem says:

Oh my goodness, so much goodness that I have on my some day list of projects…one of the ones that’s been there the longest, is vinyl to put over a chalkboard for a calendar, a tic tac toe board for my boys, and the dots game. I know I could do it with paint, but it would look so much better in vinyl!

  44. Jayne says:

There are so many ways I could use this!! I love the vinyl and scrapbooking, but the possibilities are endless.

  45. Jess says:

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, o my gosh, oh my gosh!!!!!! That is my dream right there. LOL I would use it for every single one of those applications. I want vinyl everywhere. I want stencils, I want to etch glass. I had resigned myself to using my Exact o knife because the Silhouette was so far beyond my price range. But a Free one. I would send pictures of everything that I ever made with it!!!!!!!! Come on Random Number Generator thingy!!!!! Look my way.

  46. I would love it to cut vinyl! I have tons of projects I’d love to do.

  48. susan collins says:

LOVE IT!!! I’d never heard of it, but I like what I see! I am a party-throwing gal too, so I’d definitely have to use it for that. My favorite of what you’ve shown..hmmm, so hard to choose- I like them all, so lets say the pancake batter bowl! March 31st is tooooo loonnnngggg to wait!!!!!

  49. Robyn says:

I think its time to get one of these. I’d use it for vinyl decorating, school projects, cards, or anything else I’m creative enough to come up with. Thanks for the giveaway! Oh, and etching glass would be pretty cool, too

  50. Aubrey says:

I have wanted one of these little machines for the LONGEST time!! I would LOVE to win this machine. I wish I could afford to buy it!! I would use it for everything! I’m obsessed with vinyl lettering. I sooooooo wanted to make some of those hot cocoa mugs that you made around Christmas time to give away as gifts….and some for myself :) I hope I win!!

  51. Jill C. says:

It’s hard to pick just one way I would use this! Most likely it would get the most use in my craft projects and for vinyl. Great giveaway girls!

  52. Mavis Lawrence says:

I would use it every day! I have so much I need to do since I don’t know anybody who has a vinyl machine!! I would use it for sayings for my walls, bathroom, livingroom, kitchen, vases, windows, frames, scrapbooking and cardmaking! glass etching, paper cutting and the more I look at the website the more I want to do it all! Thank you so much for the chance! I can’t wait!

From decorating my baby and little girls bedroom, to making cost effective presents for my my family (9 siblings and 21 nieces and nephews is expensive to buy for at birthday time!)It is so fun to personalize and get creative! Not to mention, I did the happy birhday board for my sons first birthday and had to use little sticky letters to “make due” while I and am having to pay someone make the vinyl letters for it-how fabulous would it be to make my own! My head would absolutely pop off with joy if I won the silouette! YIPEE! Great job on the awesome giveaway yet again! Your site is the best!

  54. Barb says:

I would definitely use it for scrapbooking and vinyl lettering! Love all the projects above! People are so creative!

  55. Deah Aldridge says:

  56. Tiffany E says:

I have been looking into the cricut, but don’t like the idea of the cartridges {another $80 each}. I love this idea! When does the promocode expire? {If I don’t win…I will HAVE to buy it.} I would use it to make quotes & things for the wall & craft projects. First, I would make some Easter or Spring blocks.

  57. Gabi says:

I would use it for everything. I have been begging my husband for a cricut but this looks even better.

My sister (who, alas, lives on the opposite side of the continent) has one of these and has extolled its virtues for a while now! I have a long list of items I want to make for home decor and gifts that use vinyl, and having my own silhouette would save the cost of ordering vinyl or the work of using handmade stencils.
    Thanks for the reviews!

We could really use it for vinyl and etching projects!! What a great machine!! I was recently introduced to your site for about a week now and have already used alot of your ideas. I love vinyl lettering, and would love to have my own machine to do it instead of paying someone. The heat transfer looks pretty cool too.

  83. Maren says:

Awesome! I love that it doesn’t use cartridges, how cool is that?! I would use the Silhouette for all of the uses but paper crafting would probably be my no. 1 use. I’m constantly doing handouts for RS and I could make them so much more creative using the Silhouette!

  84. I would LOVE to use it for card making.

  85. Katy says:

This is easy…I would definately use this for scrapbooking/cardmaking/paper crafting and vinyl. I have this wonderful short poem I’ve been meaning to order a vinyl of, plus I just had the idea of adding some vinyl damask or other fun pattern to my plain white ceramic tool holder.

I love that I’ll be able to take off the vinyl if I want to change the look and since we are in the military and move a lot, I’ll be able to remove the vinyl from our base housing walls. We have to get special permission to paint, so I haven’t really painted. Vinyl is the perfect alternative to add a little ‘something’.

I’ve been looking at the Silhouette for a long time – love that you can use your own fonts and don’t buy cartridges!

  86. alicia says:

I love it!!! I spend so much money on the vinyl letters.. How great if I could make my own at home. It all looks like so much fun… I’m not sure what project I would start on first if I won.

  87. stephanie says:

Hello! i am a follower of this great blog of yours and I thank you for this great chance to win this giveaway! hands down I would use it for the vinyl! I really hope I win this! Thanks again from The Whispering Creek House!

  88. Erin says:

Awesome!! I would make license decals for my car, personalized mugs and glasses, picture frames, wall vinyl. Lots and lots of stuff obviously! The glass etching on the website looks super neat and so does the heat transfers! I’m all about personalizing some tote bags!

    Thanks for a great giveaway!!

  89. Kristen says:

WOW! What a great item this looks like! I would definitely use it for scrapbooking and vinyl! However I would definitely be trying all the other ways! :)

  90. Heather says:

Awesome! I would love figuring out the vinyl decor!!
