How do they know when I put my baby to sleep?
May 10, 2010 by Alison
I have been trying for the last hour to get the baby to sleep…
He’s finally is out…
DING. DONG.
!
After having babies I have wanted to disconnect my door bell many times!
How do people know when I put the baby down?
How do they know when to ring the door bell within 5 minutes of my baby falling asleep?
SO here is a solution that has worked…not to mention my entire neighborhood has one because I give this as a baby gift now! (and it doesn’t cost a lot to make!!!:)
I should have done this with baby number 1!
Please Knock Baby is Sleeping Sign Tutorial
I used scrap wood. All different kinds, but they are all about 6×6 give or take an inch.
Choose paper. 10 steps to perfect modpodging if you need it:)
Cut and apply Vinyl. ‘Please Knock…Baby is Sleeping’
Use any font you like. If you need a little vinyl 101 check out the post.
If you need a vinyl lady click here.
If you need just vinyl click here
and if you want to become a vinyl lady:) and get a cutter WAIT…until Wednesday.
We have a
HUGE
BIG
Monstrous
announcement and you’ll want in!
Drill a hole in the top corners and stick wire through. This is the wire that I use for all my projects. It’s nice using stuff that I already have. The wire just needs to be wire. Nothing fancy. I got mine at Lowe’s for $7 a spool and it lasts a long while!
Twist
Stain edges, add ribbon, and make in bulk because you know your friend is going to steal yours when she sees it!
I also made one that said ‘Please Knock…Mama is Sleeping’ for a prego friend!
The sign helps a TON! I love it. The only one that can’t figure it out though is my UPS man. The neighbor kids know to knock…I wonder why he can’t?
Okay, on with the fun part…the first 5 people who leave a comment will win the vinyl for ‘Please Knock Baby is Sleeping’ sign.
Woot Woot Free Stuff…Love it!

Awesome! I love the sign!
I love that sign! Great idea… one day I’ll have a vinyl cutter!!!
Much more sophisticated than my post-it on the doorbell!
LOVE THIS!!!!! Great idea!
I need this!
CUTE!
I think my heart starts beating fast after the baby goes to sleep, hoping that the my door will not be rang upon. This is a cute idea!
This is fantastic! Thanks so much for the tutorial. What is it with people always coming by or phoning whenever I put my tot down? I also wonder if there’s any connection to kids not sleeping whenever mommy has a million things to do
Sooo cute!!!
wooops…..thought it meant first 5 on the facebook page.
What a fabulous idea!! LOVE IT!

Super cute, love it!
Those are sooooo cute!!!
this is such a wonderful idea! Every time I see a new tutorial from How Does She, I want to run out and get the stuff to make my own. I love this idea to go along with a baby gift.
If we email your vinyl lady, will she be able to duplicate the vinyl lettering from this post?
I want to get my own vinyl cutter but I can’t convince my husband it is necessary yet

Ya…more than likely! Just show her the picture. Amy from http://www.mytalkingwalls.com knows these fonts:)
I don’t have any babies in my house, but I think they would be cute with anything written on them.
Thanks for the great tutorial!

so cute… I need one…
Looks great! Did something similar (not nearly as creative) with our kids. Then again, we don’t get that much door traffic as we live out in the country. I love the vinyl though. You may convince me to try it yet.

I’ve seen this done with magnets on the back so they stick to apartment doors. I love to give these as presents!
I need one of these!!! Thanks for the chance to win one because I’m sure not crafty enough to make one, lol.
Cute cute cute!
The UPS guy always seems to come right when my kids are falling asleep! They don’t even need to ring the doorbell. I always thought I needed something like this sign!
Oh I need this! My babe is one week old, and I need the sleep as much as he does!

ADORABLE! Such a great idea!
That is so darn cute ..What a FAB idea!!
So super cute!
That is a great idea! My dad is a UPS man. His knock is usally louder than the doorbell, but if he saw this sign he would still knock. ;D

I totally hear you on the doorbell thing! After my 1st was born I covered up the ringer with a “Baby Sleeping” Sticker. People still pushed it! Then I got smart & disconnected it. This sign is super cute. I totally love it! And I love that I feel a little less wacky about the whole “don’t ring my doorbell!!” thing.
Yes way better than my piece of notebook paper and scotch tape..LOL!!
Love this idea!! I needed one of these years ago. I ended up just taping a sign on the door but that still didn’t work so eventually we did disconnect doorbell. lol Very pretty!!

Cute. Tuck a “finally” in there to exaggerate the hint!!
I thought this only happened to me. Not even a sign seems to stop them.
I’ll buy one from you!!!
SO CUTE!
Contact Amy from http://www.mytalkingwalls.com She will get one for you:)
Is it possible to buy one of these signs???
Awesome…I have got to make that for my sister.

I don’t think I made it, but that is a darling idea.
Cute idea. I have some friends I could make that for.
That is adorable and so needed for a new mom! I’m invited to a baby shower soon–what a great idea for a gift.

I need one of those for my durn mailman. He is the loudest knocker then doorbell ringer I have ever heard! UGH!
Very cute!
awesome! can i just buy one from you???
Your comments are making me laugh:) We should totally open up a shop, but we are too busy trying to think of the next thing to post:) Contact Amy from http://www.mytalkingwalls.com and I bet you can talk her into it:)
what is this monstrous announcement??? I just ordered a Silhouette. Please tell me I didn’t make a mistake!
No…you didn’t make a mistake:) It’s a good thing we promise!!!
Lovely, I’m off to make some for my daughters for Mother’s Day (last Sunday in May over here) – thank you.
I love these things! They have been a huge life saver in my house. It is still one of the best gifts I have ever recieved. Thank you Alison!! I still put mine up even now that my baby is now a toddler and when she is wide awake. I just like it when people knock and this sign is a great excuse on why they should!
This is fabulous! I need to make one of these for a friend about to have a baby. TFS!

Awesome. I wish I lived in a house instead of an appartment. Any ideas on that?
that is so adorable! I love it! I will have to make one!
I have some scrap wood that will be perfect for this! I think my house emits a signal that begs people to ring the doorbell during naptime. I just happen to have some baby gifts I need to be making right now, too!
I sooo need one of these. The neighbor boys ring the doorbell daily to ask if they can play on the trampoline…have any leftover cut out? I stumbled you like a good girl

Great job! I really like your work! I can’t wait to read your other posts. I am your newest follower.
Bonnie
I think that if i were to make one of these it would read “Baby is Sleeping & I am too….GO AWAY!” LOL
wonderful idea….wish I had thought of that 15 years ago when I had small one.
Thanks for sharing.
This is the cutest and most polite way to keep your baby sleeping. I always appreciate it when I see things like this because I’m a mom and can appreciate the accomplishment it is to get your little one down for a nap.–Those are treasured moments!
On another note, I think a permanent PLEASE KNOCK sign would be a great addition to my porch. My doorbell is rarely heard (maybe I’m going deaf?) and I usually don’t get to the door until someone knocks, anyway. ~Mark that one on my priority craft list!
These are just GREAT I wish I’d had one when my 4 babies were little. If I ever have another one I’ll have to make it (two sided for the mama sleeging one too!

I know you said use any font you like…which one did you use? I have a silhouette and you are inspiring me to use it more than I have in the past. Love your blog!!

So cute. What font did you use and can i create this is i go buy the vinyl at Michael’s or JoAnn’s Fabrics? I don’t have a clue on how to use or print on Vinyl. Is that something i can print on my computer?
The fonts are perfect! May I ask what they are?
Hi There!!! Could I pay you to make one for me???
Your font choice is perfect! What fonts did you use?
Peas Chunky and Peas Bonnie Script:)
ooo thank you! I needed the Bonnie Script! I love it!
So after seeing several of these cute ideas on your site, I bought a silhouette. I’m wondering which fonts you used to create this sign? The fonts that come with the software just don’t look as cute.
Thanks!
http://www.kevinandamanda.com/fonts/ Peas for fonts. They have a rocking selection and they are free!
I was wondering… I love all of your crafts, but how do you make your scrapbook paper look ripped? I would be afraid if I actually ripped the paper, it would totally mess up. Thanks for all the great ideas!
I really just rip it. Practice on a couple of scraps first. You’ll get it:)
How do you make the edges looked “burned”/singed like they do in these signs? It makes it look even more rustic and I love it.
Just use stain on the edges:) It’s easy!
Oh my god these are gorgeous!!! I would love to buy one in blue please let me know if that would be possible.
I made something similar when my son was an infant. I too still get the UPS man and sometimes the FEDEX guy ringing the dang bell..
Love that you made it hard wood… Mine was just laminated piece of paper.
I suggest hanging it OVER the door bell
That way the UPS guy doesn’t ring the bell before reading it
I just ordered a Silhouette SD and vinyl! I can’t wait to begin! What size of fonts did you use on this sign?
Oh…not sure:) Just size the font to the size of board you have.
I have a modpodge question to do with these signs. Do you apply a thin layer of modpodge over the top of the paper to seal it? Is this necessary? We get heavy rain here on occasion and my sign on my front door got wet, it didn’t get ruined, it only made the distressed ink run a little (which made it look cooler). I have now switched to decking stain to avoid any future problems. But, it would be really nice if I didn’t have to do modpodge on top of the paper to protect if from rain.
Thanks for all your help! The business is starting to take off, slowly, but still taking off

Where do you get all this scrap wood? I have the hardest time finding scrap wood and wood blocks!
I LOVE this idea. I care for small children in my home. As soon as naptime comes around, someone comes to the door!!!!! This sign would be very helpful. Now, what can we do about the phone??????????
LOVE IT!!!!
Can I just buy one from you?
Sorry, theses aren’t for sale.
You might be able to find someone to make one for you?
LOVE LOVE this idea! I just made a personalized version for a friend’s upcoming baby shower. Quick question though, what kind of wire is it that you use? I have scoured Lowe’s and have not been able to find anything similar. Thanks for the great post
