Rainbow Polka-dot Party – real party

Rainbow Polka-dot Party

bday-collage

Where does one come up with THIS theme, you ask?  I’ll tell you.  Because that is what you get when you ask a certain little 4 year old girl who’s super power it is to shoot rainbows from her hands that wrap around the BAD guys and catch ‘em and a certain other little girl’s mom who is obsessed with anything polka-dot what kind of party they want…if this is not a run-on sentence, I don’t know what is:).  Maybe don’t ask next time, EM… no, do ask ’cause this turned out FABULOUS!  Two minds are definately better than one when planning a party around a made up theme…especially when EM is the other mind!  Her creativity amazes me.

I promised you pictures and pictures I took!  Sorry if your scrolling finger gets tired:)

bday-047

Garland used around the room to add polka-dots and color…and cute pics of the birthday girls!

bday-043

These are streamers we hung from the doorway for the kids to walk through.  Em just stapled round foam circles we found at the dollar store to wrapping ribbon.

bday-033

tutus and…

bday-123

feather rainbow hair clips for the girls.  Nicely done, EM.

bday-006party favors for all

bday-016

Gotta Love Ikea Plates!

bday-031

Colored Lemon Heads for a treat.  Found these at CostCo – you NEED to try these, YUM!

bday-030

Shelley’s ADORABLE birthday hat, click here for her tutorial on how to make these.  And beads to make rainbow bracelets…on pipe cleaners so 4 year olds could actually string their own!

bday-200

The party table.

bday-053

I couldn’t figure out how to photograph this to give it justice…this doesn’t.  Emily tied and tied and tied and tied and tied until all the colors of the rainbow were connected onto a long string which we hung over the back door.  It MADE the party decor.  You could do this with any colors to match your theme, it took a bit of time, but it was worth it…I can say that ’cause I didn’t do all the knots…I did, however blow up my fair share of balloons, even if they weren’t as big as EM’s and she made fun of me:)  Just be sure to do it in the middle of the day and not at 11:00 at night when you are so tired that you can’t stop laughing at each other’s faces as they puff out each time you blow into a balloon, it really hinders your progress.

bday-098

Last but certainly not least…the cake.  EM did an AMAZING job on this!  Look at the polka-dots:)

bday-186

Each layer had frosting in between…lemon flavored…delicious!

And I have to share a few of the BIRTHDAY GIRLS…

Girls and Secrets

Do these wings look familiar???  EM shared a tutorial for angel wings at Christmas time.  She adapted them to fit the rainbow theme.  Also, the shirts I made with the Silhouette…a tutorial can be found here.

w-028

I LOVE her giggle:)

bEST fRIENDS fOREVER!

Over and Out until next year…or the next year – I don’t know how much of this I can take!

Love how it all turned out.

  15. Oh man! I’m doing a Rainbows & Sunshine theme for my daughter’s second birthday April 24th! (the day she was born) I actually was gonna do Ikea plates too! I wanna be as green as possible! I love what you created! Got my mind flowing even more! Do you have a recipe for the frosting?! It sounds super yummy!! :) Where did you get the tutu’s? there super cute! The red fabric near the arch is that just a curtain or a bed sheet or something?! Oh man your getting me super excited for my daughters birthday! :) I hope I can finish everything in time! Thanks for explaining what you did because I was trying to figure out the balloon arch but those link-o-loons are kinda pricey. You did an awesome job! :)

    • Missy says:

I will have to ask EM for the recipe, if I get it I will comment again. We found the tutus at the dollar store in the toy section, the red fabric is just my curtain for my back door. Your party sounds fun! Good Luck!

  16. Emily says:

This is amazing. We went to a polka dot party awhile back and one of the cutest ideas was a ‘craft’ using the “do a dot” markers (Michael’s or Joann’s) and using them to fill in a picture of a gumball machine. You could do the same thing with a rainbow picture. The kids loved using them, but I guess it would depend on the ages.

I am in LOVE with this party!! So, so fun!! It’s amazing!!

  18. Emily says:

At the risk of sounding like a baby, I just have to say you got me crying! Those two truly are Best Friends. I love how you talked about Lays super power. You are a good story teller. You are also the best photographer ever, and I can’t wait to steal the pics!

  19. This party was perfectly decorated and photographed.
I hope you don’t mind me saving a few pictures for future inspiration, you just did such a fabulous job!

I loved looking at all the pictures, I miss those days. I am hurridly trying to come up with ideas for my daughters 16th birthday.

  23. Mickie says:

This is awesome! Another idea- not the perfect rainbow colors, but still fun. There are these beads you can order online (I’m sorry I don’t have that information handy)… they are ultraviolet beads that are bland colors- make bracelets with them then go out in the sunshine- they will change colors from the light! Kids love them!

  24. Lisa says:

Love the rainbow theme – how cleverly executed! That cake is just fabulous! Looks like the adults had as much fun planning the party as the kids did attending! Thanks for the fun ideas.

What did you do for invitations? Thanks!!

    • Missy says:

I used a circle stamp in photoshop and stamped polka-dots all over a 4×6 in rainbow colors then I put the information about the party in the circles along with a couple pictures of the girls – it turned out pretty cute! Then I just printed them at costco as a 4×6 picture.

  28. How adorable, you have the cutest ideas I am so making a cake like that for someones birthday this summer :-)

  31. ALyssa says:

I LOVE this party, it looks fantastically fun and I will have to print it off and put it in our party book. I keep a running list (with visual aids- ideas for games/favors/decorations/cakes) for my kids to pick their party themes out of so that they don’t pick weird things that I can not do (last year my son picked a ‘bear in a den’ theme for his party and this year he has selected a bat theme for his June birthday- we need to limit it to things I CAN do).
On her wing tutorial it says that Em may be doing a tutu tutorial, is that in the works? I would love to find a way to do them inexpensively, without having a lot of left over materials. We only have two girls and teh way that I know how has LOTS of leftovers in materials and wasted $.
    Thanks for sharing this
    Alyssa

    • Missy says:

She said she would do the tutu tutorial – YEAH! Now I just have to get to helping her…ie take pictures of her doing it so I don’t screw it up!:)

  34. Lori says:

Super cute party! Where can I find the recipe for the cake? Is it a mix tinted different colors or made from scratch? I would love the lemon icing recipe too!

    • Missy says:

I will have to get the cake recipe – but white cake mix tinted the colors would work. Here is the frosting recipe:
      2/3 cup butter, softened
      4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla ( I think she used lemon extract instead)
      2 to 4 tablespoons milk
Beat butter until kight and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating well. Beat in extract and enough milk for desired consistency.
      YUM!
