How to make Cantaloupe even SWEETer

June 23, 2010 by

One of the reasons I love summer is because of all the fruit!  Watermelons, blueberries and cantaloupe!  Fresh, sweet, juicy fruit.  The kind that is sweeter than candy.  You know what I am talking about.  Delicious.ness!  Soft, ripe, goodness!  YUM!

My kids love fruit, but sometimes it’s fun to change it up a bit!

I saw this idea somewhere a few years ago in my pre-blogging days,

so if you are a blogger and you posted this a few years ago, email me and I will put in your link:)

Scoop out the middle of the cantaloupe like you normally do.  It’s best to make one major crater in the melon than a bunch of little ones.

Do you see my reflection in the picture?  I do.

Make your J.E.ll.O

When you open a bag of Jell-O, the puff of sugar that comes whirling out of the bag screams, “Kids come knock me off the counter and then find a glass of water to spill so it will create a ginormous mess for mom to clean!”  So…

I put my  younger kids in chairs so they could watch and learn how I did it before they attempted it.  Look how intensely they are watching me. They are soaking in all the goodness of creating.

Ya right…they are watching a cartoon so I could hurry and get it done before my older kids got home from school.   I really don’t like to clean up gooey,  sticky, red messes!  Hey, sometimes it’s best to surprise them with a new treat anyway.

After you add the boiling water to the mix then you stir, add only 3/4 of the cold water.  It gives it a firmer consistency.

Pour your Jell-O into the crater.

Then stick it in the refrigerator.  Place you melon in a bowl so it doesn’t tip.  Helping to prevent messes!

One happy kid

Two happy kids.

It worked.  The melon is gone!

  3. What a creative idea. We usually have a hard time keeping melons around but they might let one sit in the fridge long enough for the jello to set. I know they would love it if they did. Thanks for the idea, we will give it a try this summer.

CRAZY good idea! How fun is it to eat melon during the summer? Now that you’ve added jell-o, my melon craving is flaring up! This is such a fun twist to one of my summer favorites.

Anything that has to do with cantaloupe catches my eye since it’s in my business name (Cantaloupe Corner). This looks like so much fun! I might just have to run to the market and get a cantaloupe just for this recipe! My kids will love it! Thanks for the great idea.
