I have been to my local dollar store and picked up 12"x12" metal sings with not so cute pictures on them and use these as magnet boards, for a dollar you can't go wrong and they are a great size!

I have done several magnet boards covered with various fabrics, papers, vinyl they work great. Just use strong magnets (not the self-adhesive strip of magnet tape)
You can see pictures on my blog.

I saw it last year for around $7, but if you google 'craft coupons' you might be able to find a %50 off coupon to Michael's, Roberts, Craft Warehouse...whatever store is in your area!

I wonder if you could cover the whole thing with fabric (with Modge Podge as the glue) and it still be magetic enough to hold the magnets?
