Having a small family with two toddlers, doctor visits have increased like crazy. Not that my kids have severe medical conditions, but it seems we are going in for so many different things. Whether my child has an allergic reaction, needs flu shots or comes down with something more serious like pneumonia. We are always there.
Recently our family took a trip to California and we spent a night in Las Vegas. Our 3-year-old daughter came down with a severe cough that night and could barely catch her breath all night. We got online early the next morning to try and find an instacare clinic and we found one about 20 minutes away. We rushed over, only for them to send us to a hospital that has a children’s emergency room. As we were driving over, we passed a billboard for the very hospital we were going to advertising a 12 minute wait time. Our wait: 5 hours!! It was ridiculous. I will admit, that once the doctors did see us, they were great, but 5 hours?! They diagnosed her with the croup, and she received a dose of medication and the croup eventually passed. We received our bill in the mail a couple weeks later for $900. OUCH!!
Shortly after, my husband was talking to his cousin on the phone, who happens to be a certified nurse practitioner at a Walgreens Healthcare Clinic in Arizona. After relaying the story to her, she said, “why in the world didn’t you go to a Walgreens Healthcare Clinic?” We even looked up the Walgreens clinics in Vegas (that we should’ve gone to), and it would’ve been so much easier, cheaper, and faster. And they treat upper respiratory conditions. We’ve also learned that at select locations, they also offer expanded services which include hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and high cholesterol. Some of the locations are even staffed with a physician’s assistant. How awesome is that? We love our doctor, but when we can’t get in to see him, for whatever reason, the Walgreens Healthcare Clinics are a super convenient option. If the nurse practitioners are anything like my husband’s cousin, they are top-notch. We would trust her and value her opinion. Since doctor visits will always be part of our lives until our children move out of our house we will always keep Walgreens Healthcare Clinic an option – especially if we are traveling through Las Vegas and our child gets sick.
