Birthday Balloon Texture Ball

Balloon Texture Balls

In my very first Interior Design class in college we were studying the design element: texture.

Our project was to create a texture ball. I’m not sure why, but I immediately thought of little green army men. I found a bag of them at a local dollar store, found a guy that was tough and kind enough to cut off the bases off of their feet, and began to create what I titled “World World III”.

Between us we spent over 30 hours creating one of the coolest balls of the freshman class (and I’m not just saying that…I got an A+ on it. Woo woo!) Ever since then I’ve been obsessed with texture balls…probably because I know how much work goes into them.

So after I saw Shelley & Missy’s adorable Birthday Balloon Wreaths, I knew I had to try it with a styrofoam ball.

Alright, here’s my birthday balloon texture ball…

Balloon Texture Balls

Grab a medium sized styrofoam ball and a bag of small water-balloons.

Put a line of hot glue down the back of the balloon and place it on the ball. Then begin to overlay the balloons.

Oh, learn from me: I got a little too creative and tried to make a pattern…didn’t quite think about what I would do on the top and botton after the pattern was complete.

So what am I saying? Have fun with it, relax, and just put the balloons on there in a random manner! It’s more fun anyway.

We have a birthday in the house this Thursday and I’d love to use my new party decor!

How would you use this ball to decorate for the party? I’d love to hear your ideas!

I remember my texture ball assignment too. I did jingle bell balls. I think I got a B! ;) —Love the balloon idea. Fun centerpiece for a party. Could be made into a topiary? :)

I have made a balloon topiary using the Styrofoam ball for my son’s birthday party. I also made a balloon wreath. You can see them both in this post: http://lynseyandbrian.blogspot.com/2011/09/birthday-celebration-2-sesame-street.html

    CUTE!!!

I totally thought you were going to “poke” them each into the styro ball like the fabric square wreaths of old! Might have to try that myself!! Love the glue and I agree, a topiary would be adorable!

Thanks Melanie! Although maybe poking would’ve been easier…the hot glue and I did not get along on this one! I was worried that the pins would come out though, that’s why i decided on the glue. Let me know what works for you!

I remember my design ball, too! :) It was seashells. I like your army guy one! :)

  6. I fell in love with the Birthday Balloon Wreath. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea with us!

nifty. I never quite grokked the whole texture ball thing, but using something unusual makes it more interesting for me.
