Did you actually use two whole sticks of butter in that apple crisp? That seems like a lot. It looks fabulous though!

It totally depends on what you like but really any apple works for the apple sauce and for the cobbler the tartness of a granny smith goes well with the sweet topping but anything would be great!

What are the best kind of apples to use for these recipes? We do not live close to an orchard, so I need to know what type to buy.

I made crockpot apple sauce and canned it last year. I didn't use any sweetener at all (i've never purchased sweetened apple sauce either), just used lots of cinnamon and nutmeg, and it was AMAZING! Tasted like apple pie! So, I say try it without any sweetener, your kids won't even know the difference.

Not to be a grinch, just wanted to clarify since this is a category titled "Healthy Living", but sugar and splenda are not healthy sweeteners. I know splenda has been touted as being healthy but that is deceptive advertising. It is a chemical that is very harmful to our bodies.
I love sweets! Delicious recipes! :)

We have a big box of apples in our garage that I wanted to use but didn't know how... THANK YOU!!!!! I tried both recipes and they were superb! Alex couldn't stop raving about it and said he may have found his new favorite dessert, and he's kind of picky about desserts. And I've never been a huge fan of homemade applesauce until now. Wow. Both very delicious. Thank you so much for sharing!!!

By the way, next fall when it's time to harvest apples again, I'd highly recommend going out to the LDS Church orchard in Caldwell. Spend a little time picking for the orchard, then you can glean all you want for yourself for free. Not only were the apples super tasty and beautiful, but it was so neat to get our kids out in a field and let them experience how nature works. HUGE apples hanging in bunches all over the trees. It's definitely a new tradition for us. And then we'll eat apple sauce and apple crisp for months on end afterward. :)

Yummmmmmmmmm! Homemade applesauce is so delicious, and if you are in a hurry, just core, peel and cut up some apples, heat up a saute pan, put in a little butter ( or apple juice to be healthier), and simmer your apples a few minutes, and add sweetener (white or brown sugar, or agave, Splenda, stevia, etc.) So good with pork!
