8 Clever Homemade Gift Ideas

Will you imagine with me..just for a moment? Close your eyes. Wait, open them! You need to read. Um….well, imagine with your eyes open for a second. That can be done, right? Just pretend you’re in calculus class. Okay, back to imagining.

It’s a loved one’s birthday, and you are running out of gift ideas. In the end everyone goes for typical gifts like a perfume, a book, or a pair of gloves. It could very well be the reason why every birthday party has that distinct déjà vu quality.

But now… you are going to do something completely different.

YOU, my friend, are going HANDMADE!

That’s right! You are going to roll up your proverbial sleeves (and your literal ones, too) and you are going to CREATE a gift that will be guaranteed to cause excitement and make you the star of the party. And we are here to help. Yes. It’s what we do. Let’s get sharing, shall we?

1.Muffin bags (Oh and they are a FREE printable!)

Food, especially food with, uh, SUGAR equals HAPPY, HAPPY, JOY, JOY! Especially when it’s given in a unique package with a personal touch! Package a sweet treat in a printable gift bag with a little bling, like this one from “Funkytime”!

2. Favorite Things 2X4 Craft

clever-homemade-gift-ideasAlison shows us how to avoid the awkward “Um….thaaaaanks” response to your gift by making a personalized photo holder out of…get this…ordinary two by fours! LOVE IT! Slap some paint or patterned paper on those babies and some black vinyl, and you’ll have a homemade gift that will leave them talking!

3. Emergency Kit Gift Box

clever-homemade-gift-ideasWhat about a gift that is cute AND functional? Put together an emergency gift box with some vintage matchboxes and candles and more! “Homework” fills us in on how to put this together. I know I would LOVE getting one of these!

4. Grandparent (or ANYONE) Frame

Put a twist on the ordinary  “picture frame” gift by getting a multi-photo frame, adding a printable in one of the spaces and sticking a painted monogram on it, like this one submitted by The Scrap Shoppe! It totally gives it the “wow” factor, right? Anything personalized is extra special.

5. Ruffled Camera Strap Cover

Is there a photography enthusiast in your life? Take it from one who knows…they would FLIP over this gorgeous ruffled camera strap cover. Nursery Rhymes and Sweet Times walks you through each and every step, and if you can sew a straight line…you can make this! Seriously. Love this thing.

6. Bottlecap Necklace

clever-homemade-gift-ideasMaking your own piece of jewelry is the great way to give the gift that NO ONE ELSE will be giving. Creative Goddess shares how she made this totally unique piece of wearable art!

7. Glass Gem Magnets

clever-homemade-gift-ideasMaking unique gifts en masse can be quick and inexpensive, as Madiganmade shows us. With so many gorgeous patterned papers out there, really – the sky is the limit as far as the design goes. ANYONE would love getting some of these to slap on their fridge or their filing cabinet. Think: friends, neighbors, teachers, craft groups, church goers, party guests..etc!

8. Hot Chocolate For Two!

clever-homemade-gift-ideasAaaaannnd…we’re back to sugar. I like coming full circle :) I adore this idea from Amy W.! Package up some hot chocolate mix and chocolate-dipped marshmallows in a cute little carrying case for some hot chocolate for two. Fun, unique, inexpensive, and homemade!

I like to re-purpose the drink carriers from our local Sonic restaurant. Some of them are sturdier than others, which I don't understand, but I saw this last one about the hot chocolate for two and the box looks like a re-purposed sonic box. I've also used them for baby shower and wedding gifts and as table centerpieces for such events. SOOO fun! Thanks for reminding me about this! Have a great night! =)

Hi Bobbi, I run a gift shop online. I make most of the gifts myself. It will make excellent birthday gifts, return gifts, mother's day gifts ... basically there is something for everyone. You can check it out and see if it fits in another gift ideas column you write.

I love these ideas you have here! Thanks! Aparna.

oh I forgot - another homemade gift that I make - here goes: You will need an empty nesquik plastic bottle (the big one you get at Costco). Paint it in your favorite color, add stickers to it or write on it with metallic paint pen or decorate it any way you like. Then you can fill it with little trinkets or fill it with school supplies and gift it to your kid's teacher for valentine's day or teacher appreciation day.
