I know this is a re-post, but I am spending this week with the family and our new family dog(ahhh!).
I decided to put up one of my favorite projects. These make me smile:)
ABC’s with Vinyl
Yea!!! I’m excited how this project turned out!!!. I needed something for my little guy’s room. I’ve seen the canvas with the ABC’s and thought they were really cute, but I can’t paint…so Vinyl to the rescue!!!
So here we go with the tutorial:
1. For the top piece cut a 1×6 into a square (it will be about 5.5×5.5). You can use pine or mdf. It doesn’t matter:) You can get both at the hardware store.
2. For the bottom piece cut a 1/4 inch mdf into 7×7’s. If you don’t have a table saw just use 1×8 pine or mdf and cut it with your{{or your neighbors}} chop saw. Make sure they are square.
3. Paint the bottom piece dark brown{{or whatever color}}
4. Mod Podge the top piece (10 steps for perfect mod podging)
5. Sand
6. Stain
7. Attach the top to the bottom. You can use wood glue and it will work the same. I’m a little impatient and wanted it done fast so I pulled out the nail gun!
8. I had my husband router the key hole in the back. {{I was tired and he was willing to help…yeppee!!}} If you don’t have a router just use picture hooks.
9. Apply your vinyl. I used different fonts and even put some cute pictures mixed in. This is were your own cutter comes in handy!!!
10. Hang on the wall. Yep we put 26 holes in the walls, but it was sure worth it!
11. And yes my husband helped me hang them because I don’t always hang things straight:){{or as he would say ‘never’ hang things straight} We need a tutorial on hanging pictures…

I LOVE DIY wall art and I have to say that this is cutest thing I’ve come across ever. Not exaggerating. You could sell this! I made small letter and number wall art for my little guy, but this puts mine to shame. And SO jealous of your cutter. 🙁 Great job…but you already know that!

This is so fun, I love it! Out of curiosity, is z just hanging out on it’s own? It looks like five rows of five, but I can’t see the bottom.
Alison says
I put it under the ‘y’ it is on it’s own line. I’ve also made 1234 blocks too that I was going to use to fill the square, but they are not done. I kinda like the floating ‘z’ though:)

WOW!!! I love it!! I have been wanting to do an alphabet in my playroom this is the cutest one I have seen! Thanks for sharing!!

I love how this turned out! I have been wanting to do something ABC related on my boys wall. This would be so cute.
K. says
which cutter do you have? i am considering that investment… but not sure which is most versatile. leaning toward The Silhouette. any input from you or your followers is welcome!
Alison says
Hi k
I have a big bulky vinyl cutter (that I don’t recommend for personal crafting). I am familiar with the cricut and think it works great! I don’t know about the silhouette. It would be nice to do a comparison post though…I’ll work on that:)
Charlie McGinness says
Hi Allison & K,
I own a cricut & silhouette. I love both however have to say the silhouette because of been able to do more with it. The cricut I am limited and the silhouette I love because it allows me to cut so much more. (Not too mention I sell the silhouette cutters and they have finally came out with software for doing rhinestones with…Yeah!!!)
Also I have some great recommendations on the mats as to what you can do.
Let me know if either of you would be interested in either…

I love it! Unfortunately anytime I open the drawer that holds the hammer and nails my hubby comes running with the question, “what are you doing?” before I even have the chance to close the drawer. He kind of freaked out the day I hung 18 pictures on our dining room wall by myself. Surprisingly I’ve received compliments from every person who walks in and sees the pictures, not just the photographs but how well they are displayed.
Maggie says
I love these – my son is obsessed with letters, this would be a great project for his room.

You’ve been helping me fight the winter blahs-they’ve been really bad this year, and about 1:30ish in the afternoon is when it gets really blah. So, I’ve been coming here, and looking around for a few mintues-that’s about all I can take before I just have to get into my studio and get to work, that’s how fun and inspiring your blog is for me. I can’t wait to finish these dance costume alterations so I can use up my new bottle of mod podge on one of the hundred fun things I have seen on here! Thanks so much, you have no idea!
Shelley says
You are so sweet. That comment totally made my (our) day! Hearing things like that make doing this site worth it. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

So cute!!!
Beckie says
I totally love this. I have seen ABC walls before with different letters and stuff but it would take forever to collect all 26 different rare letters but this is instant and waaaay cheaper. Thanks for the inspiration. If I try it I will let you know.
Katy says
I’ve been wanting to do this! This very idea has been floating in my brain and I can’t believe here it is on your wall. I have no experience with woodworking-that may make this all a little difficult. But I love it!
Jenny says
This is so cute! I love it! I love the colors you picked and the fonts for the letters. One question, when you stain, do you only stain the edges? Do you wipe on and wipe off, or just leave it? I think it looks great how it turned out. Thanks for the idea!
Alison says
Sorry I forgot to explain that. I used a stain stamp pad that is used for scrap booking. You can find it at the craft store. I do it this way becasue I hate the smell of stain and I don’t want to wait for it to dry. And yes…I just did the edges.
Jennifer says
WOW this is super cute! how much did it cost for everything?
thanks for the inspiration. I’m going to try this too….
Elizabeth Ray says
I love this idea! I am wondering if it will work just as well to use cardstock for the letters and photos and mod podge them on, if you don’t have vinyl. What do you think?
Alison says
PERFECT!!!! Yes that would totally work!!!! Good thinking and thanks for sharing!
Kelly says
I love this! I have a really long playroom with windows that line the whole wall- it’s a little hard to decorate. However, above the windows I 7 1/2 inches of drywall- this is the perfect solution. Thanks so much!
Becky says
I love this–thanks so much for sharing!
Ashley @ SimplyDesigning.blogspot.com says
This is such a fabulous idea!!! I LOVE it! After our little boy arrives, and we move (yes I will be moving with a 3.5 year old and a 5 month old…probably across the country) I will have to make these for his nusery!! It is so hard to find cute boy ideas but this is fabulous!!! (would be great for a girl too…my girl will probably be jealous so perhaps we should make her a set too!) Oh…my hubby will be SO happy to hear I have a project for him to help me with! 🙂 teeheehee! FABULOUS idea. thanks for sharing!

What a neat project!! I don’t have a need for letters but I’m sure I can find some way to use the same idea for a different hanging. Thanks!
CRAZYMOM says
Oh wow! This so so impressive. I have to admit, I laughed that you on’t paint but you can use power tools, which are MUCH more scary for me. LOL
Great job!

I “Stumbled Upon” your 26 ABC’s post. LOVE it!!!
Heather M says
I want to know how much it all cost? Thank you!!
I will have to print stuff on the computer and cut it out VERY CAREFULLY and modge podge it on! But I’m wondering how much the scrapbook paper and wood cost! Thanks so much, this is an AMAZING project.
Alison says
I don’t have the exact #, but I suggest using coupons to get the scrapbook paper. The wood…I just used some scrap that I had and it worked so I can’t give you a number on that either:)
Send us a pic when you get it done!
Heather M says
Wish I had some scrap wood laying around!! Thanks so much. I can’t wait and Fiance has approved it. I’m hoping to get started on it this weekend. I might just start with her name so I can get the hang of it… Luckily her name is only 5 letters long! Thanks so much for this post.
Kimberly says
What are the measurements of this all hung up?? TIA!
Alison says
It’s about 39 inches by 39 inches…you can always adjust sizing to fit your space:)
Amber says
Hi,
Love this! I was wondering what are the measurement of the letters (length and width)? Also, is there a site that would print each letter in a different font?
Alison says
They are about 4×4:) http://www.mytalkingwalls.com is our gal!
Staci says
Just found your site…not sure WHERE I have been? I’m already in love. This project is on my to do list for sure! I have an abc themed preschool room & this would be perfect. Thank you for sharing! Now I am off to browse the rest of your blog!
Annie Banannie says
Is this a dumb question….
How did you space these letters to make a square/rectangle? Every time I try to do this with my project- there’s always an odd letter out!
I couldn’t tell from the pictures. Thanks!!!
Shelley says
I’m not sure Alison saw this,…so I’ll answer for her! 🙂 I think she put the Z on a row all by itself at the bottom right. Super Cute with Z as ‘icing on the cake’. 🙂 Hope this helps.
Annie Banannie says
Thanks Shelley! I took photographs of the alphabet from all over town- “J” from jamba juice, “R” from right start, “B” from Burger King….you get the idea. It made for a fun project and lots of colors. Been having a heck of time getting it formatted and in some kind of square! Thanks again for the help!
Shelley says
We want to see it!!!! We just started a flickr group and would love for you to add your project there! 🙂 Thanks Annie!
Vanderbilt Wife says
Oooh! That is super cute. I’d LOVE to do that in my daughter’s room….but I am not at all crafty.

I absolutely love this (and your website)! I don’t even have kids yet and I already want to start all of these adorable projects! I wish I had a chop saw and a vinyl cutter 🙁 I would be in hog heaven and not getting anything else around the house done. lol! Thanks for all the ideas and inspiration!
Kelly says
Would you make these for me?? LOL! Seriously!! They look awesome!
Lisa says
Adorable! Personalized wall art is so much better than something from the store!
BirthdayPartyBabble.com says
I am so using this for a 50th birthday party theme I am working on right now. This is perfect to spell out Happy 50th Birthday Party. I think I can get each of the guests to write a little note on the back of each of them, too, to personalize each block. Thanks.
Cryssy says
Love this. WOuld be cool to put them all on one board to hang and then make the letters some how reversable and do Uppers and Lowers or even Colors or Shapes for different teaching type games!
Nicole @ pinkpineappleprojects.com says
Hey thanks for this super cute idea and great tutorial! I made some very similar for my son’s nursery (http://www.pinkpineappleprojects.com/2011/01/wash-out-your-image-photoshop-tutorial.html). Thanks again! LOVE THESE!
Tracey Marzich says
The pictures of this project are lovely!
Haley says
SO cute!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Amanda says
So the colored designs on the top block behind the letters….what is it? Scrapbook paper? Or colored vinyl? What exactly are you mod podging?
Thanks!! I love how this looks!
Little Bit says
so cute… I really need to find out more about these ‘vinyl cutters’ everyone except me apparently is talking about… great job on hanging them straight… that’s a huge chore with just a set of 4 this was a lot more than that… I’m re-pinning too. little bit
