For all of you who have emailed me about starting a craft business, entering craft shows, or wanting a cutter that can mass produce or make long quotes…here we go!
Let me first start out by saying that the Silhouette is amazing for personal crafting of paper, vinyl, heat transfer, etc… but if you’ve ever thought about starting a craft business and are wondering about which machine to buy to support a home based business…go to Sign Warehouse. I learned the hard way. I bought my first large cutter off ebay…and it was crap not good. I didn’t have any tech support, didn’t cut all the letters, shorted out and lead a very short vinyl cutter life. Oh and it was the size of a small mini van. HA! My husband laughed…kind of.
Before HowDoesShe, I did craft shows and craft groups. It was a great way to make a little cash{{ching}}, help pay student loans {{urgg}}, have extra cash to buy gifts{{yay}}, and save cash (making my own gifts){double yay!}}. I did shows and craft groups until my 4th baby and then we started HowDoesShe and now I share ideas for you to go out and make the big bucks:)
In the meantime, 4 of my friends started a home business and asked me what cutter to buy…Sign Warehouse. Their first cutter is still cutting away and I’m already on my second…and yes my second is from signwarehouse.
So here are some tips on being successful at Craft Shows:
1. Whatever you have the least of…be prepared to sell out quickly.
HA! That was my first experience. Things I didn’t think would sell went super fast and things I thought would go…didn’t.
2. If you have a cutter…TAKE IT WITH YOU! People loved personalized items on the ‘fly’. Be prepared with extra help for weeding, tweezing and order taking.
3. Make your booth clean. Clear out the clutter and focus on your main products.
4. Of course, clear pricing. Oooo, total car salesman’ish’ if you have to ask and barter for pricing at craft shows.
5. Make your booth fun….and don’t give people the s.t.a.r.e. down when they walk by.
Okay, so if you are seriously looking into buying a craft cutter for a home based business…look into the EnduraCUT plus 24. You don’t need anything over 24 inches unless you are going to be making business signs or massive building signs…or billboards.
Tech Support is great {{I know I’ve talked to Mike and Warren many of times}} and their cutters last. All of my friends who have started their own home based business have paid for their cutter in a few months {{do I need to say ‘results not typical’ here because I can’t guarantee it?}}. They have all been super happy with their results. Sign Warehouse is also giving HDS readers a discount. A $400 discount {{that is huge}}!!!
Ideas for craft shows…Make teacher signs, just leave off the names so people can personalize them.
Laundry signs…something to make this chore more enjoyable!

Hi – I would absolutely LOVE to win vinyl to be able to make vinyl lettering. Of course, at present I don’t have a great way to cut it but I am hoping that will be coming soon too
I’d get a rainbow of colors of their 12″ X 24″ Oracal 631 vinyl sheets.

And I write notes everday my daughter chooses to take a cold lunch to school. Plus, she get’s stickers on all her baggies usually having to do with a theme. Holiday time gets holiday stickers, Birthday get’s birthday stickers, start of baseball or a recital…baseball and dance stickers, etc. I’ve done this since she started school and she tells me I can’t stop until she is in HS. We’ll see, since she finally told me to stop on the notes but keep going with the stickers (and she’s only in fourth grade).
If I won I would buy some more vinyl. (I really would love to get the EnduraCut 24″ and start a small business but wow, the price scared me, they really paid for their cutter in TWO months, AWESOME!)

I have the CraftROBO that I bought a few years back from Sign Warehouse. It is still going strong. And I’ve had to talk to them a couple of times since I bought it. They have been great each time!
If I had some $ to spend on their site, I would go with some extra blades for my cutter and some vinyl. Right now I only have white. I use it for my business. But I would love to get some fun colors, and especially black.

School doesnt start in NJ still 9/2 but heres what I usually do:
I have 5 children and they all leave at different times for the bus, so I take a photo of them on our front porch and then I take them to the bus stop.
I always put a note in their bookbags:
15 yr old – you can do it this year…give it your best
11 yr old – 6th grade dude…your a little man. you can do it.
9 yr old. – all by yourself in the school now. big bro is gone, enjoy it
3 yr old – mama loves you maya.

I am completely in love with the new line of Oracal 631. They have such a beautiful soft finish to them and come in gorgeous colors. So of course, I’d buy rolls and rolls of this new product. Hmmmmm….what colors am I missing???

I’ve never dealt with cutting vinyl other than with Cricut vinyl. I clicked on the Expressions Vinyl.com ad on your site and learned there was oh so much I could do with different types of vinyl. After being laid off at the end of the school year money for experimental art is no longer in the budget. If I were to win the $100 in merchandise from Sign Warehouse I might just be able to make some money before the holidays. Now that would be a PRIZE!!!

I just bought a Silhouette and would LOVE to buy vinyl to put all sorts of things on my daughter’s wall (starting with a big WISH BIG, a few birds, maybe some butterflies). She’s 11 months old and my husband doesn’t take a lunch to work, but I put a love sticky note on his desk. And I’m already on the email list. $100 would be a TERRIFIC way to start decorating the house with my new cutter (which I bought thanks to your recommendation!).
I think I would buy vinyl…but, oh my goodness, how do you ever choose!!!

My son and I write love notes together since he’s not quite reading and writing yet, but we have a few non-verbal codes we’ve made up to say that we love each other. It’s SO sweet to watch him get a big grin when we do our “code.” I can’t wait until he can read the notes. He’s so excitable!
